Lab: Motivating Backups

In class, we discussed the surprising phenomena that while the fourfold pattern predicts that most people would back up their data—low probability of a large loss—it turns out that at best it is an even split between those that practice regular backups and those that do not. This has interesting implications for designers concerned with computer security.

  1. Discuss with your group why you think this discrepancy exists. Try to think of technical, psychological, and social reasons that explain this gap.
  2. With your group brainstorm at least three interventions that address these concerns. Try to leverage the ideas of emotional design that we discussed today to achieve these goals.
